Daily hospital charge raised from €18 to €20

An order of 21 December 2017 sets the daily hospital charge under article L. 174-4 of the Social Security Code at €20 per day from 1 January 2018, and €15 per day in psychiatric wards. The charge is the patient's contribution to accommodation costs for stays over 24 hours; it is not reimbursed by health insurance but can be covered by complementary health insurers.

Measure impact

Each day in hospital costs the patient or their complementary insurer €2 more (€20 instead of €18), and €15 in psychiatry. People exempted by the Social Security Code are not affected. The amount stayed at €20 until 28 February 2026; an order of 27 February 2026 raised it to €23 (€17 in psychiatry) from 1 March 2026.
