2012 car malus: higher amounts for the top three bands

The 2012 Finance Act raises, from 1 January 2012, the amounts of the three highest bands of the registration malus on the most CO2-emitting passenger cars, to €1,300, €2,300 and €3,600. It also lowers from 240 to 190 g CO2/km the entry threshold of the annual tax on the most polluting vehicles.

Measure impact

Affects buyers of high-emission new cars (maximum malus of €3,600) and owners of vehicles emitting more than 190 g CO2/km, who are liable for the annual tax. According to the Senate, the measure aimed to bring the bonus-malus scheme closer to balance.
