Abolition of the stock exchange transaction tax
Article 11 of the 2008 Finance Act repeals Articles 978 and 980 to 985 of the General Tax Code, which levied a stamp duty on stock exchange transactions carried out by intermediaries established in France (stock exchange tax). The National Assembly had voted to abolish it from 2009; the Senate, on the initiative of its finance committee, brought this forward to 1 January 2008, the version kept in the law. A separate financial transaction tax was created in 2012.
Measure originators
A positive amount is revenue or savings for public finances; a negative amount is a cost or lost revenue.
Measure impact
Purchases and sales of securities through intermediaries established in France no longer bear a stamp duty. The expected yield of the tax for 2008 was estimated at €260 million in the 'Voies et moyens' annex; the Senate finance committee argued that its removal would be offset by transactions moving back to France.
